Tokyo dialogue underscores expanding Indo‑Pacific defence partnership

In Tokyo on August 7, the Indian Ambassador Nagma Malik and Japan’s Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi exchanged views on extending the Indo‑Pacific defence partnership.

Koizumi remarked that the growing defence cooperation between India and Japan is vital for peace and stability across the region and the world. He highlighted the importance of joint efforts in maritime security, cyber resilience, and space exploration.

Their dialogue built on the 8th India‑Japan defence policy talks held on July 13, where officials examined cooperation in defence industry, emerging technologies, and other strategic domains.

Future plans discussed include strengthening joint headquarters collaboration, expanding maritime joint exercises, boosting capacity‑building programmes, and advancing defence equipment and technology sharing.

Both parties reaffirmed their dedication to promoting a free, open, rule‑based Indo‑Pacific anchored in the principles of international law.
