Third runway breach in two weeks prompts Australian Transport Safety Bureau review

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has opened a third inquiry into runway safety at Sydney Airport after a series of incidents in a short span. On 9 August, a Qantas flight crossing the runway collided with the clearance path for a Virgin Australia take‑off, forcing the latter to halt and request a new clearance.

Earlier, on the same Sunday, a Jetstar flight bound for the Gold Coast was forced to apply emergency brakes when it came within close proximity of a towed Qatar Airways Boeing 777, injuring a cabin crew member who required medical attention. No passengers were harmed. The preceding incident on 27 July saw a QantasLink service narrowly avoid a collision with another Qantas aircraft on the runway.

ATSB Chief Commissioner Engs Michel said the bureau is still analyzing why the 9 August event was not reported immediately. "Both aircraft were operating under ATC instructions, yet the proximity was unsafe," he noted. The investigation will include data‑link communications, radar logs and testimonies from pilots and ground staff to determine systemic gaps and recommend corrective actions.
