In a move to bolster ties amid global uncertainties, Japan's Prime Minister Sane Takaiichi will embark on a two-day official visit to South Korea on May 19. The announcement came from Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Masanao Oh-zaki, highlighting Tokyo's proactive diplomatic outreach. Takaiichi's itinerary centers on a key meeting with President Lee Jae-myung, where they will tackle critical matters like securing energy supplies, stabilizing critical mineral chains, and addressing oil disruptions triggered by the Iran conflict. These discussions are vital for both economies heavily reliant on stable imports. The venue might be Andong, Lee's home city, adding a layer of familiarity to the proceedings. This trip continues the shuttle diplomacy pattern, following Lee's January visit to Japan for talks in Nara with Takaiichi. It was a hot topic at the recent two-plus-two security dialogue in Seoul on May 7. Yet, South Korea's Defense Ministry poured cold water on May 8, stating no plans to pursue ACSA now. 'We aim for defense cooperation rooted in respect and trust, but ACSA isn't on the table,' an official noted. Despite this, the visit signals both nations' commitment to navigating challenges like North Korean threats and supply chain vulnerabilities together.
