Switzerland’s First State Visit to India Focuses on EFTA-TEPA Opportunities

Swiss President Guy Parmelin began a three‑day official tour of India on Monday, marking his inaugural state visit since taking office. The agenda centers on leveraging the EU‑Free Trade Association (EFTA) ties and finalising the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) that promises expanded market access for both sides.

During his arrival at Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Parmelin received a formal welcome from President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The ceremony was followed by a press briefing where both leaders affirmed a shared commitment to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, science, and innovation.

Foreign Minister S. Jayashankar met the Swiss president and highlighted the strategic importance of the TEPA, describing it as a catalyst for joint ventures in technology, clean energy, and advanced manufacturing. He also conveyed confidence that an upcoming Modi‑Parmelin summit will accelerate project pipelines.

A high‑level Swiss delegation, comprising senior officials and leading entrepreneurs, accompanied the president, signalling the intent to explore opportunities across sectors such as fintech, biotech, and education. President Murmu will host a state banquet to honor the visiting head of state.

The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that Switzerland is India’s largest trade and investment partner among EFTA members. The visit is expected to reinforce the longstanding friendly relations and translate diplomatic goodwill into tangible economic outcomes under the TEPA framework.
