Sudan’s Small‑Scale Gold Mining Faces Fatal Risks After Recent Collapse
The recent mine collapse in Sudan’s eastern region has once again highlighted the danger inherent in informal gold extraction. Over 1.5 million miners operate at more than 800 sites across northern and western Sudan, generating the bulk of the nation’s gold—about 70 tonnes in 2025, according to official data. However, the lack of regulatory oversight, poor infrastructure, and insufficient safety equipment make accidents common. The Ouni disaster, which claimed ten lives and left twenty‑one injured, underscores the urgent need for improved standards. Experts say that without investment in proper shaft support, ventilation, and emergency response training, similar catastrophes will recur. The government’s response so far has been limited to rescue operations and statements of condolence, leaving broader reforms pending.
