Strategic Ties Deepen as NZ and India Aim for Greater Cooperation

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon hosted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a luncheon in Auckland on 11 July, declaring the two nations ready to advance to a strategic partnership. Luxon noted that India, under Modi’s guidance, has emerged as a leading economic engine and a pivotal geopolitical force in the Indo‑Pacific.

The New Zealand leader stressed that reliable partnerships rest on mutual trust, shared values and consistent follow‑through – principles that apply to both trade and diplomatic negotiations. He praised India’s rapid growth, scale of innovation, ambition and strategic reach.

Both governments agreed to expand collaboration across multiple sectors, including trade, foreign direct investment, higher education, technology development, sports, and tourism. In addition, they committed to deeper defence cooperation, joint maritime security initiatives and coordinated law‑enforcement efforts.

Luxon highlighted New Zealand’s strengths in food production, education, technology, tourism and sustainability, describing the country as an open, innovative and globally connected partner. He also lauded the Indian community in New Zealand, whose contributions to business, health, culture and community life underpin the bilateral bond.

Concluding the event, Luxon thanked Modi for his personal dedication and expressed excitement about building a partnership that delivers measurable outcomes for both societies.
