Strategic Role of Japan in Safeguarding Taiwan’s Sovereignty

Analysts note that Japan’s geographic position makes it a critical buffer against any Chinese attempt to dominate the Taiwan Strait. The Ryukyu Islands lie directly in the path of potential Chinese amphibious routes, meaning any aggression would also threaten Japan’s southern territories and maritime supply lines.

Taiwan’s security strategy now emphasizes that without a capable Japanese ally, the island could become strategically isolated. Strengthening defence ties, including formal legal frameworks that allow Japanese forces to assist Taiwan, is presented as a priority.

By expanding cooperation, both nations raise the strategic cost for Beijing, potentially curbing its aggressive calculations in the region.
