Strategic Hormuz Highway Plan Emerges Amid Trump Threats

Amid heightened rhetoric from former U.S. President Donald Trump, Iran has announced negotiations with Oman to transform the Strait of Hormuz into a "highway" for maritime traffic. The plan envisions right‑hand traffic for inbound vessels hugging the Iranian coast, while outbound ships would steer closer to Omani waters.

Baghei emphasized that the southern route formerly pushed by Washington violated a June agreement between the United States and Iran and raised environmental and security concerns. The United States has previously blocked Iranian ports and threatened to fire on vessels breaching the sanctions.

If the corridor is operational, it could sideline the United States from direct involvement in Hormuz traffic, a shift that Tehran claims will enhance regional autonomy over the crucial shipping lane.
