Spain and Morocco Push Back Migrants; EU Urges Tighter Controls

Spanish and Moroccan enforcement officers succeeded in sending back the bulk of irregular migrants who arrived in Ceuta last week. According to the commission president, the joint operation prevented any person from reaching the Spanish mainland or other EU territories.

The episode, she noted, demonstrates how robust bilateral cooperation can safeguard EU borders. Nevertheless, von der Leyen argued that the existing monitoring system, while solid, requires additional strengthening.

She urged EU governments to keep all major crossing points under constant surveillance and to establish a rapid‑response mechanism for future spikes. The commission also plans to draft a set of recommendations aimed at improving cross‑border coordination and sharing best practices among member states.
