South Korean authorities launch Level‑1 emergency as rains exceed 800 mm

A massive rain event that delivered more than 800 mm of precipitation in Gyeongju has prompted the South Korean government to declare a Level‑1 emergency. The designation, issued by the Ministry of the Interior, activates the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters to coordinate rescue and relief operations.

Interior Minister Yoon Ho‑jung called for an all‑out effort to protect citizens, while Prime Minister Han Seong‑sook directed police, fire squads and other agencies to prioritize the rescue of trapped individuals and the protection of vulnerable communities.

In addition to the fatal landslide, dozens of homes and vehicles have been stranded by floodwaters. Emergency crews have rescued three people from a collapsed building, though one victim later died.

The Korea Meteorological Administration continues to monitor the situation, issuing additional rain warnings that may bring up to 150 mm more precipitation in some areas later today.

Residents are advised to stay tuned to official channels, heed evacuation orders, and avoid traveling through flooded zones.
