Skopje Ceremony Highlights Peace, Tolerance as Gandhi Statue Revealed

The unveiling of Mahatma Gandhi’s bronze figure in Skopje brought together Indian President Draupadi Murmu and North Macedonian President Gordana Siljanovska‑Davkova in a celebration of shared democratic ideals. The event, held at the city’s museum, featured speeches that linked Gandhi’s philosophy to contemporary challenges.

President Murmu, speaking through the presidential secretariat’s X channel, stressed that the statue would stand as a testament to the enduring friendship and mutual respect between India and North Macedonia. Both heads of state subsequently toured the Mother Teresa Memorial, paying homage to the city’s most famous daughter.

The itinerary also included a parliamentary address, a bilateral meeting at Villa Vodno where regional and global issues were discussed, and the launch of a bilateral business forum aimed at expanding economic cooperation.

The visit concluded with a guard of honor, a floral tribute at the tomb of Gotse Delchev inside the Church of St. Spas, and a luncheon hosted by Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, showcasing the warmth of the diplomatic ties.
