Sicily’s coastal town battered by twin tornadoes, climate links examined

Twin tornadoes ripped through the western side of Sicily on October 10, leaving a trail of destruction that included homes, cars and a school building in the coastal town of Marsala. The storms, fueled by warm Mediterranean waters, moved from the sea toward residential districts, overturning vehicles and shattering glass.

The school, which housed 273 students at the time, sustained heavy damage. All children were escorted to safety; six reported minor injuries. Overall, 11 people required hospital treatment, with a 70‑year‑old patient described as critically ill.

A separate incident in the Petrosino area saw a car caught in the gale force winds slide into a ditch, injuring its two occupants. Regional Assembly President Getano Galvagno affirmed the government's close monitoring of the situation and expressed sympathy for the injured.

Meteorologists warned that the anomalously high sea‑surface temperature in the Mediterranean can intensify such events, reinforcing concerns about climate‑change driven extreme weather. Local authorities have begun rescue operations, relief distribution, and damage assessments of the affected infrastructure.
