International shipping freedom at risk if Iran dominates Hormuz Strait

Secretary of State Marco Rubio told ASEAN foreign ministers that Iran’s push to commandeer the Hormuz Strait is more than a bilateral tug‑of‑war. It threatens the universal right of ships to pass through international waters without undue interference. Rubio highlighted that the Hormuz Strait is a critical artery for global oil and cargo movement; any attempt to impose taxes, fees or blockades would undermine the stability of worldwide supply chains. He warned that a single precedent in the Middle East could cascade into other strategic chokepoints, endangering the Indo‑Pacific and beyond. Rubio reiterated that the United States remains ready for talks, yet Iran’s lack of follow‑through on prior agreements raises serious concerns.
