Serbia Sets Early Parliamentary Vote for October 25 as President Plans Exit

Belgrade, September 11 – President Alexander Vucic announced a major political shift on Friday, stating he will resign on September 25 or 26 and then contest the October 25 parliamentary election as a regular voter.

While presenting a package of measures intended to raise the living standards of ordinary Serbians, Vucic fielded questions about the resignation of a local media chief, indicating that both steps are part of a broader reform agenda.

He confirmed that after finishing his official engagements in the United States later this month, he will step down and run as a private individual, noting that “the law does not restrict me from campaigning as a citizen.”

In a televised speech, Vucic also signed a decree to dissolve the National Assembly, advancing the parliamentary election to October 25—well before the standard timetable. He argued that the early vote will reduce the political tension that has lingered for years and give the electorate a clear opportunity to voice their preferences.

The president highlighted that the upcoming election offers Serbia a chance to synchronize its development strategy with the preparations for Expo 2027, scheduled for May next year in Belgrade. He assured citizens that there is sufficient time to ready the expo and other long‑term projects.

Vucic called on all political forces and voters to conduct the 45‑day campaign period with peace, dignity, and respect for differing opinions. He stressed the importance of safeguarding the rights to assemble and express views, trusting that the public will make the right decision for the nation's future.

After an extraordinary cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Djuric Machut formally presented a request for the president to dissolve the parliament and call a snap election. Vucic first won the presidency in April 2017 and was re‑elected in April 2022; under the Serbian constitution, a president serves a five‑year term and may be re‑elected once.
