Seoul Says North Korea Fired Around 12 Missiles Toward East Sea

Seoul, October 29: The South Korean military reported on Thursday that North Korea launched approximately twelve ballistic missiles toward the East Sea. The weapons are classified as short-range projectiles.

The military said the launch was detected around 12:30 p.m. local time from the Wonsan area. Its technical assessment, including the missiles' maximum range, is ongoing.

The firing followed a October 12 event in which Pyongyang claimed to have launched 'tactical ballistic missiles.' North Korea described that test as part of an effort to upgrade a vital segment of its arms program.

South Korea's military has intensified its surveillance and says it is fully prepared for any further missile activity. It has also been sharing details of the latest launch with Washington and Tokyo to keep a strong defensive position in place.

North Korea has also been active in naval weapons development. On October 17, 2026, it claimed a successful underwater test of its new high-speed, precision 'Jam-2.0' (ZM-2.0) torpedo system, which uses artificial intelligence for target detection and engagement.

North Korea's state news outlet confirmed the test a day later. According to the report, the test validated key technologies that improve propulsion system efficiency and rocket propulsion device performance. Pyongyang further stated that the system has been tested more than 180 times in the past five years.
