Seoul Pushes for New Security Model Amid Global Tensions

President Lee highlighted the complex international security environment during the opening of the Seoul Defense Dialogue on Tuesday. He pointed out that armed confrontations continue across several continents and that the weakening of the nuclear non‑proliferation regime is a cause for alarm.

The Korean leader emphasized that cutting‑edge technologies such as artificial intelligence are adding layers of uncertainty to traditional defence calculations. In response, Lee advocated for a security partnership model that rests on three pillars: robust deterrence, compliance with global norms, and shared resilience.

“South Korea will strengthen its autonomous defence abilities while expanding the scope of dialogue based on mutual respect and cooperation,” he stated. Lee also reiterated his support for the United States and North Korea to restart high‑level talks, noting that Seoul’s armed forces stand ready to underpin any diplomatic progress with a formidable military presence.

These remarks come as both Koreas take incremental steps to reduce friction, including President Lee’s September 2 declaration of resolve to establish a lasting peace order on the peninsula and his promise to aid in reviving U.S.–Pyongyang negotiations.
