President Segura's Hijab Restrictions Spark Political Outcry

President Antonio Jose Segura addressed the nation late Tuesday, stating that “the face should be considered a core element of human identity and communication.” His comments came as Portugal’s parliament gave the final go‑ahead to a controversial bill that bans garments designed to conceal the face in public. The law was pushed by the far‑right Chega party and met with strong resistance from the Portuguese Bar Association, the Public Prosecutor’s Office High Council and the Association of Women Lawyers, all of which labelled the measure potentially unconstitutional. Left‑wing parties warned that the ban could exacerbate racial and gender‑based hostility, while the centre‑right Social Democratic Party defended it as a necessary step for societal cohesion.
