Safety Concerns Rise After Major Gold Mine Disaster in Narok

The recent collapse of a gold mine tunnel in Narok County has heightened safety worries throughout Kenya's mining industry. The disaster, which claimed at least five lives and left numerous miners possibly trapped, occurred after prolonged heavy rains weakened the underground structure. Authorities highlighted the challenge of conducting rescue work without adequate underground detection devices. The incident took place in Kilimapesa, the country's biggest commercial gold mine, situated roughly 180 kilometres south of Narok town. Over the past years, similar mishaps have resulted in multiple fatalities, prompting mining unions and civil groups to press the government for stricter enforcement of safety regulations and the adoption of modern mining technologies.
