Search Ongoing After Ferry Fire Claims Lives Near Coron, Philippines

The Philippine Coast Guard confirmed a fatal fire on the MV June Easter ferry while it was en route from Manila to the popular dive destination of Coron. The incident occurred approximately 1.2 nautical miles off Marisilla beach, igniting a blaze that killed five passengers and left 86 people still missing. A total of 134 passengers and crew were listed on the ship’s manifest. Rescue teams have extracted 43 survivors and continue to battle rough seas that have pushed the wreck further from shore, making recovery operations more difficult. The official statement warned that the casualty figures could rise as the search continues.
