Samangan Police Wipe Out Massive Poppy Fields in Drug War Push

In a decisive move against Afghanistan’s drug economy, security forces in Samangan province have eradicated approximately 1,000 acres of opium poppy crops in just two days. The operation, centered in Dara-e-Suf Payeen and nearby villages, reflects growing momentum in the Taliban-led administration’s anti-narcotics strategy. Police officials emphasized that the campaign is not limited to crop destruction but also targets individuals involved in the production and distribution of illegal substances. They vowed to pursue traffickers relentlessly across the northern region. Recent weeks have seen parallel efforts in Baghlan, where 400 acres were cleared, and in Badakhshan and Takhar. A major seizure of 55 kilograms of methamphetamine in Nimroz and the nationwide arrest of 80 suspected smugglers further illustrate the scale of enforcement. Authorities have also conducted public incinerations of seized drugs in Khost province. Officials say these visible demonstrations of enforcement are designed to deter future cultivation and trafficking. The campaign is expected to expand, with warnings issued that any involvement in the drug trade will result in prosecution.
