Salamina Blaze Forces Massive Rescue Operation, Leaves Two Dead

A wildfire that erupted on the Greek island of Salamina on Sunday has resulted in two deaths and four people being hospitalized with burn injuries. The bodies were recovered near the Peristeria forested region where the fire began in the early afternoon. Another fire was fighting in the Celinia area close to the Athens‑Piraeus harbor.

Emergency services dispatched 146 firefighters along with volunteer brigades. Aerial assets comprised four firefighting aircraft and six helicopters. Residents in the surrounding neighborhoods were ordered to evacuate, and the Hellenic Coast Guard remained on alert, ready to deploy ships if required.

The incident follows two weeks of an unusually high wildfire danger across Greece. Authorities have warned that several mainland districts and parts of the Aegean islands could see perilous fire conditions in the near future. The latest loss raises Greece’s summer wildfire death count to eight.
