In a significant diplomatic outreach, S Jaishankar travelled to Cyprus this week for the European Union’s informal foreign ministers’ retreat. The two-day Gymnich meeting in Limassol offered an opportunity for direct engagement with key European voices on trade, security and technology. The Indian minister held separate discussions with the foreign ministers of France, Spain, Poland, Romania and the Netherlands. On social media, he singled out his conversation with Spain’s José Manuel Albares, saying the two reviewed progress in bilateral trade, defence industry collaboration and mobility of students and professionals. Jaishankar also circulated images from the wider gathering, underscoring India’s deepening footprint in Europe. He wrote that the talks focused on harnessing common interests within an emerging multipolar order and translating them into tangible projects. Analysts note that such informal settings often pave the way for formal agreements later. With the EU collectively representing India’s largest trading partner, sustained high-level contact is seen as essential for advancing pending market-access issues and joint research initiatives.
