Putin has reportedly demanded the annexation of specific territories as a condition for peace, leading to intensified attacks in those areas. According to reports, Putin has suggested to Trump that Russia’s control over these regions be recognized to achieve a lasting resolution to the conflict. This proposed solution involves ceding Ukrainian territories where fighting is ongoing. However, this path appears challenging, given that European nations are seeking security guarantees for Ukraine, and Zelensky has repeatedly stated that he will not agree to any settlement involving territorial concessions.
Russia aims to seize control of key regions, including Donetsk (88% occupied), Luhansk (75% occupied), Zaporizhzhia (74% occupied), Kherson (71% occupied), Sumy (68% occupied), and Kharkiv (50% occupied). These regions have significant populations of Russian speakers. These areas are of strategic importance to Russia, as a means of consolidating its influence and achieving its objectives.
Following meetings with European leaders, it became clear that Putin will not relinquish control of these six regions. Zelensky has only met with Trump and has not accepted any of Putin’s conditions. The situation suggests that any agreement will likely favor Russia’s terms, and Russia appears to have no immediate interest in ending the war.
Russia opposes the presence of NATO troops, as indicated by Dmitry Medvedev’s response to the suggestion of deploying French troops to Ukraine. Medvedev stated that Russia would never accept such an agreement. Sanctions imposed on Putin’s close associates have been discussed, and Trump has advocated for their removal, contingent on a ceasefire.
