RSS Leader Calls for Action Over Words on Unity in Diversity

New York, 30 August – At the Universal Unity Festival in Madison Square Garden, Mohan Bhagwat, chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, urged Indians worldwide to embody the principle of “unity in diversity” through deeds rather than sermons. He said that this guiding concept is woven into India’s DNA, reflecting a longstanding cultural mindset that unites the nation while honoring its many traditions.

“Every nation is more than a map; it carries a purpose, a mission, and a fate to fulfill,” Bhagwat said. He added that India’s fate is to uncover the hidden unity among global differences and to remind humanity of this truth whenever needed.

He contrasted the typical American focus on “pluralism” with India’s dual emphasis on both unity and diversity, stating that the two are inseparable in the country’s genetic code.

Acknowledging apparent distinctions—different nationalities, languages, religions, lifestyles—Bhagwat argued they do not erase the natural connection that motivates people to look out for one another.

“Human beings possess the ability to think and discern right from wrong; with that gift comes the duty to protect the earth and care for others,” he remarked.

Bhagwat defined dharma as a universal principle that upholds balance in the cosmos, not merely a religion or ritual. He stressed that the advancement of individuals, societies, and the environment must be synchronized, with no single element being suppressed for the benefit of another.

He concluded that India’s message is especially pertinent today as the world grapples with numerous crises. The Indian diaspora, he said, should deliver this message by living it—acting as a real‑world example rather than issuing sermons—thereby providing a “blessing” to a world that is stumbling at every turn.
