Robbery Drops While Home Break‑ins Climb in South Australia
South Australia’s crime report for the year ending August 2026 shows a mixed picture. Assaults on on‑duty police officers rose by a quarter, reaching 793 incidents from 635 the previous year, marking the twelfth straight upward tick.
Robbery, however, fell sharply by 13 percent, with 438 offences recorded compared with 501 a year earlier. Homicide‑related crimes also declined, slipping to 42 from 53 cases. Shop thefts experienced a modest three‑percent reduction, ending at 21,757 incidents.
In contrast, residential burglary numbers rose to 5,947, up from 5,584, and non‑residential break‑ins increased to 3,513 from 3,391. Sexual offences nudged higher, totaling 2,718 cases.
Deputy Commissioner David O'Donovan attributed the robbery decline to targeted police operations, tougher bail conditions, and rapid detention of repeat offenders. He highlighted the focus on protecting victims from both physical harm and emotional distress.
The report also referenced a September 22 attack in western Sydney’s Lailor Park, where two intruders assaulted a 64‑year‑old and a 44‑year‑old man inside a home. Both victims required emergency treatment and were later admitted to hospital in serious condition.
