Republican Envoy Urges Calm Over Trump's Ireland Comments

Former Republican Representative Michael Mulvaney, who served as President Donald Trump’s special envoy for Northern Ireland during the previous administration, appealed for restraint after Trump mused about a single Irish entity. Speaking to reporters, Mulvaney said the comment should not be read as a change in American diplomatic strategy toward the British Isles.

He reminded observers that the United States maintains a status‑quo approach to the Good Friday Agreement and that any official policy shift would require formal diplomatic channels. Mulvaney’s remarks came as British Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch and Reform UK head Nigel Farage publicly rejected the idea, insisting that Northern Ireland remains an integral part of the United Kingdom.

Community Secretary Angela Rayner added that the British government will continue to respect existing agreements and that Trump’s off‑the‑cuff remarks are not a basis for policy revision.
