Recent Seismic Activity Highlights Ongoing Risks in Pakistan and Afghanistan

Pakistan and its neighboring regions have experienced a spate of earthquakes over the last few months, culminating in a 5.8‑magnitude event on Saturday morning near Khuzdar, Balochistan. The National Centre for Seismology recorded the quake at 10:37 a.m., with a shallow depth of 15 kilometres, resulting in widespread shaking but, thus far, no reported damage.

Earlier this month, residents of Afghanistan felt a 5.3‑magnitude tremor, while September saw a 4.1‑magnitude quake in Pakistan’s interior, originating 130 kilometres below the surface. In August, a 4.9‑magnitude quake struck eastern Nangarhar, causing fifteen injuries. June’s 6.2‑magnitude quake in Afghanistan was felt as far away as Delhi, Jammu‑Kashmir, and several North Indian states.

The frequency of these events underscores the persistent seismic threat along the Indian‑Eurasian plate boundary. Experts advise authorities to maintain readiness, reinforce vulnerable structures, and educate the public on safety measures during tremors.
