Recent Seismic Activity Across Afghanistan and Neighboring Regions

Afghanistan was rocked by a 5.3‑magnitude earthquake on Thursday morning at 06:59, as reported by the National Centre for Seismology. The tremor originated inside Afghan territory and, according to preliminary assessments, caused no loss of life or property damage.

The country has seen a cluster of quakes this year. On 7 September, a 4.1‑magnitude event occurred at 05:36, with its focus situated 130 kilometres below the surface. No adverse effects were noted.

In August, eastern Nangarhar province endured a 4.9‑magnitude shock that left fifteen people wounded, highlighting the varying severity of recent tremors.

The most powerful quake of the year struck on 27 June at 07:19:51, registering a magnitude of 6.2. The vibration was strong enough to be felt in Delhi, Jammu‑Kashmir, and several other northern Indian states, underscoring the cross‑border reach of Afghan seismic activity.

Additionally, a 4.6‑magnitude earthquake was detected in Tajikistan on 10 September 2026, centered at latitude 37.907 and longitude 72.742, about 213 kilometres east‑north‑east of Fayzabad, Afghanistan.
