Quad Sherpa Meeting Emphasizes Open Indo‑Pacific Vision

Senior diplomats from India, the United States, Japan and Australia met in Washington on September 4 to reaffirm the Quad’s strategic focus on an open Indo‑Pacific. The Sherpa‑level dialogue reviewed ongoing collaboration in maritime security, technology sharing and regional stability.

India’s Foreign Secretary chaired the session, building on a recent Sherpa summit in New Delhi that laid out a roadmap for the upcoming foreign‑ministers meeting. The United States sent its South‑ and Central‑Asia special envoy along with Ambassador Sergio Gor, while Australia’s Deputy Secretary Eli Lawson and Japan’s Vice‑Foreign Minister Hiroyuki Namazu represented their capitals.

The officials assessed progress on joint naval patrols, data‑exchange mechanisms and joint research on emerging technologies. They underscored the importance of a rules‑based maritime order and pledged to expand cooperation beyond traditional security, encompassing climate resilience and infrastructure development.

A consensus emerged to prioritize result‑driven projects and to sustain regular coordination ahead of the next Quad foreign‑ministers gathering, ensuring that the partnership continues to shape a free and prosperous Indo‑Pacific region.
