Qatar Calls Reports of Iranian Pilot Detention ‘Misleading’

Doha, 16 August – Qatar’s foreign ministry has publicly dismissed any suggestion that it is holding Iranian pilots. In a statement posted on X, spokesman Mazed bin Mohammed al‑Ansari described the circulating claims as “misleading” and said the ministry was shocked by the misinformation.

Al‑Ansari clarified that the pilots had entered Qatari airspace without authorization. After confirming the aircraft’s trajectory, Qatar attempted to make contact but received no reply. He emphasized that, pursuant to international law, Qatar was compelled to take steps to defend its airspace.

He pointed out that the situation had already been addressed through formal diplomatic channels. Following the incident, Qatar’s rescue teams began a sweep to locate any remains of the pilots. After discovering one set of remains, Doha entered discussions with Tehran to hand the body over.

Iranian military leaders assert that three pilots were captured by Qatari forces after their jets were shot down while returning from a March operation over a U.S. installation. They further claim a fourth pilot died in the encounter.

The episode follows the 28 February joint Israeli‑American raid on Tehran and other Iranian locations, which killed senior officials and civilians. Iran answered with a series of missile and drone strikes targeting Israeli and U.S. facilities in the region.

The deceased pilot, Majid Kajemi, was returned to Iran and laid to rest in Shiraz at the end of July.
