China’s railways achieved a milestone in the first three months, ferrying 1,013.3 million passengers—a 5.5% rise over last year’s figures, reports China State Railway Group. With daily trains hitting an average of 12,072, up 7.1%, the system adeptly handled surging volumes.

Spring travel for festivals, leisure, and floral spectacles drove the uptick. Responding swiftly, operators launched 627 tourist trains tailored to varied interests, from adventure tours to serene nature escapes. This strategic move has invigorated tourism, injecting vitality into local economies nationwide.

Border-hopping rail links posted impressive gains. The high-speed Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong corridor transported 8.66 million cross-border passengers, growing 17.7%. Meanwhile, the China-Laos line welcomed 112,000 international riders, a 31.6% increase.

Trains linking China to Mongolia, Russia, Vietnam, and North Korea have enhanced people-to-people contacts, spurring trade and collaboration. This quarter’s performance signals a strong trajectory for China’s rail sector, poised to support broader economic expansion in 2024.
