Putin Signals Support for Iran‑US Diplomatic Efforts in West Asia

During the October 8 telephone conversation, President Vladimir Putin addressed the broader diplomatic landscape of West Asia. He acknowledged ongoing attempts by several countries to mediate between Iran and the United States, aiming to lower tensions that have escalated since early 2024.

Putin expressed Russia’s willingness to back such diplomatic initiatives, stating that Moscow is prepared to play a constructive role if called upon. He highlighted that a reduction in hostilities would benefit not only Iran and Russia but also the wider regional security architecture.

The Russian leader also referenced the February 28 attacks launched by Israel and the United States on Tehran and other Iranian cities, followed by Iran’s retaliatory missile and drone strikes that targeted Israeli and American assets, as well as the tightening of control over the Hormuz Strait.

In concluding remarks, Putin urged both Tehran and Washington to honor the June 18 memorandum of understanding, which set a 60‑day deadline for negotiations that expired on August 17, and to pursue a final settlement that can halt the cycle of escalation.
