Property Tax Revision Sparks Mixed Reactions

South Korea’s property‑tax amendment proposal has generated a split response among the electorate, according to the latest national barometer survey. Forty‑six percent of participants endorsed the changes, while 41 percent voiced opposition.

When asked about the anticipated consequences for housing costs, 55 percent predict that both "jeonse" deposits and monthly rents will climb, 27 percent see little to no impact, and 8 percent even expect a reduction in rent.

The poll also captured broader sentiments toward the administration. President Lee Jae‑myung’s approval rating dipped to 49 percent, his lowest since taking office, and dissatisfaction rose to 43 percent. The ruling Democratic Party’s support remained stable at 40 percent, whereas the People Power Party’s backing increased to 23 percent.

Policy analysts suggest that the mixed reactions to the tax revision reflect deeper anxieties about economic stability and housing affordability in the post‑pandemic era.
