President Mwinyi to Attend IIT Madras 63rd Convocation in Chennai

NEW DELHI, July 16 — Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, the President of Zanzibar, will be in India from July 17 to 20, with his first stop in Chennai to serve as the chief guest at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras’ 63rd convocation ceremony.

The visit, extended at the invitation of India’s Vice‑President, will also feature meetings with Vice‑President C. P. Radhakrishnan and Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar. Topics on the agenda include a review of existing India‑Tanzania cooperation and the identification of new sectors for joint action.

The IIT Madras Zanzibar campus, launched in October 2023, has completed two years of operation, representing a key example of India’s global educational outreach and its growing partnership with African nations.

President Mwinyi is expected to arrive in Chennai on July 17, proceed to New Delhi on the evening of July 18, and on July 19 attend a wreath‑laying ceremony at Rajghat, honoring Mahatma Gandhi, before concluding his meetings with Indian officials.

The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted that the President’s trip is likely to energize India‑Zanzibar ties and contribute to a stronger India‑Tanzania relationship built on mutual interests.
