Secretary‑General Guterres emphasized that the United Nations Secretariat is prepared to assist any reliable initiative aimed at reducing tension and reaching a sustainable settlement. He reiterated the importance of respecting the principle of freedom of navigation as enshrined in international law.

The UN’s call for restraint comes as Iran’s IRGC announced the seizure of a sophisticated U.S. autonomous underwater vehicle and the downing of an MQ‑9 Reaper drone, actions that could further destabilise an already volatile region.
