India’s pivotal role in voicing the concerns of the developing world received high praise from Anil Sooklal, South Africa’s High Commissioner in New Delhi. Speaking on Wednesday, Sooklal hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership in elevating the Global South’s agenda on global stages, calling India’s contributions extraordinary.
In a detailed conversation, the diplomat traced India’s deep-rooted involvement in Global South affairs predating independence. The 2023 G20 summit under India’s presidency stood out, where PM Modi’s initiative led to the African Union’s permanent inclusion—a move celebrated across Africa. ‘South Africa and the continent warmly welcomed India’s steadfast advocacy,’ Sooklal stated.
This milestone ensures the African Union speaks authoritatively for Africa in G20 matters. Complementing this, India introduced the Voice of the Global South Summit, led by PM Modi on two occasions, which drew global attention to pressing issues and promoted joint action.
Sooklal described India as a frontrunner and innovator in addressing these challenges. PM Modi’s respected leadership has driven India’s economic surge, doubling GDP and lifting it to the fourth spot globally while pulling millions from poverty. His influence in BRICS, G20, and other forums is molding an emerging multipolar order.
‘PM Modi is seen as a capable, effective leader by the Global South,’ the envoy remarked. Turning to regional stability, Sooklal voiced support for Bangladesh’s upcoming elections, advocating for a democratically elected government. He called the interim setup’s poll commitment positive and anticipated peaceful proceedings, underscoring a stable Bangladesh’s value to its people, the region, and the world.
