Pakistan‑Controlled Kashmir Election Marred by Violence, India Calls It Void

The Indian government has declared the recent polling exercise in Pakistan‑occupied Kashmir (PO K) null and void, citing widespread violence, allegations of ballot‑box tampering and the lethal killing of a political activist.

In a briefing held by the Ministry of External Affairs, spokesperson Ranveer Jaiswal emphasized that India’s viewpoint on the matter is consistent, well‑documented and universally understood. He reiterated that the entire region of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh – including the areas under Pakistani control – remains a non‑separable part of the Indian Union.

According to the ministry’s assessment, the election is a “show‑case” intended to provide a veneer of democratic legitimacy to an illegally held territory while diverting international scrutiny from systematic human‑rights violations.

The three‑stage poll, conducted under tight security measures, commenced on Monday. The initial phase was plagued by reports of physical assaults, alleged fraud and a fatal shooting. Rival political outfits – Pakistan Muslim League‑Nawaz (PML‑N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) – exchanged blame for the disruptions, further eroding confidence in the process.

The PPP reported that its activist, 35‑year‑old Mukhtar Yunus, was shot dead in Kotli district, accusing PML‑N supporters of the act. PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto‑Zardari expressed grief over the incident and raised questions regarding the impartiality of the local election commission.

India concluded that any attempt to portray the poll as a legitimate expression of the people’s will is a strategic ploy to normalise an unlawful occupation and conceal ongoing breaches of fundamental rights.
