Official Statement Highlights India‑Iran Historical Ties Ahead of Funeral

New Delhi’s Ministry of External Affairs released a statement on July 2 confirming that Bihar’s Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Saiyed Ata Hassnain and Foreign Minister Pubitra Margaret will depart for Tehran on July 3. Their presence at the burial of Grand Ayatollah Saiyed Ali Khamenei is intended to represent India at this significant event.

The ministry emphasized that the delegation’s participation showcases the long‑standing civilizational relationship between India and Iran. Such ties have historically underpinned mutual political goodwill and expanding trade links.

Iranian officials have extended invitations to several Indian parties. PDP leader Mahbuba Mufti has already arrived in Iran, while Jain Monk Lokesh has announced a direct journey from the United States.

All arrangements for the late leader’s final rites are complete, with the funeral ceremonies set between July 4 and July 9 in the Grand Mosalla complex of Tehran. Dignitaries from many countries are expected to gather there to offer tributes.

President Masoud Pejshakian, in a message circulated by the state news agency, highlighted the nation’s collective spirit, urging Iranians of all backgrounds to join the funeral and demonstrate unity on the world stage.
