Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman Heads to Canada and US After BVI Talks

Following her discussions with the British Virgin Islands leadership, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman is set to embark on an official visit to Canada and the United States between 25 August and 2 September. The itinerary includes a senior economic dialogue in Toronto with Canada’s Finance Minister François‑Philippe Champagne, where the two governments will examine avenues for deeper trade, investment and financial sector cooperation.

In Canada, Minister Sitaraman will also join an investment round‑table that brings together CEOs and senior executives from the energy, artificial intelligence and critical minerals sectors. The forum aims to identify new partnership models, showcase Indian innovation capacities and attract Canadian capital to Indian projects.

The U.S. leg of the trip will focus on strengthening fiscal coordination, addressing shared challenges such as climate finance, and exploring joint initiatives in digital payments and financial inclusion. Both visits are designed to reinforce India’s strategic economic relationships with its North American partners and to diversify sources of foreign investment.

The finance ministry reaffirmed its commitment to expanding India’s global financial network, citing the recent BVI engagement as a catalyst for broader multilateral collaboration.
