New U.S. Drone Tariff Aims to Reduce Dependence on China

The Trump administration announced a sweeping tariff package that could double the cost of imported drones from China and other foreign producers. A full 100 percent duty will apply to heavy drones and to systems equipped with capabilities such as thermal cameras and docking stations, while a 25 percent levy will cover lighter models. The policy seeks to shrink the current reliance on Chinese manufacturers, whose firm DJI controls more than two‑thirds of the global drone market. By raising import costs, the government hopes to spur U.S. manufacturers to scale up production and create a resilient domestic supply chain. The tariffs are set to be enforced starting September 3, as trade tensions with Beijing continue to rise.
