How New Tariffs Increase the Bill for a 200‑Unit Household

A typical middle‑class home in Dhaka that consumes around 200 kilowatt‑hours each month now faces a bill that is roughly 12.5 per cent higher than before the tariff change. The shift from a wholesale price of 7.00 to 8.39 taka per kWh translates into an additional demand charge, while the retail rate adjustment pushes the per‑unit cost up to 10.63 taka. When the extra 162.50 taka is added to the base amount of 1,294.50 taka, the total reaches 1,457 taka before taxes. For families already allocating a large share of their monthly income to food, transport and education, this escalation may compel them to cut back on essential cooling, thereby exposing them to the relentless summer heat that currently blankets much of the country.
