New High-Speed Lines Link North, Central and Northeast China
Beijing reports that four high‑speed rail sections began service on the same day, knitting together disparate regions of the country. The Shenyang‑Shangqiu leg of the Beijing‑Hong Kong route, the Xi'an‑Ankang arm of the Xi'an‑Chongqing line, the Yichang‑Shengshan corridor, and the Harbin‑Yichun stretch collectively expand the network’s reach.
The longest, Shenyang‑Shangqiu, measures 552 km and is vital for the growth of the new Shenyang district. The 171‑km Xi'an‑Ankang segment connects several historic sites, promising a surge in cultural tourism. At 101 km, the Yichang‑Shengshan line will enhance links between central China and the south‑west, while the 318‑km Harbin‑Yichun line marks the most northerly point of high‑speed service.
Trains on three of the lines will travel at 350 km/h; the northern Harbin‑Yichun line will operate at 250 km/h, reflecting safety standards for colder, rugged terrain.
