President of Nepal, Ram Chandra Poudel, dissolved the House of Representatives on Friday, acting upon the recommendation of newly appointed Prime Minister Sushila Karki. A notice from the President’s office stated that the House was dissolved from 11:00 PM on September 12, 2025. The notice also announced that the date for new parliamentary elections has been set for March 21, 2026. Sushila Karki, the former Chief Justice, was sworn in as Nepal’s first female Prime Minister on Friday, and will lead the interim government. This action brings an end to the political uncertainty that has gripped Nepal, following the resignation of KP Sharma Oli from the Prime Minister’s post due to youth protests against alleged corruption and social media restrictions. President Poudel administered the oath of office to 73-year-old Sushila Karki. The newly formed caretaker government has been tasked with holding new parliamentary elections within six months. The oath-taking ceremony was attended by the Chief Justice of Nepal, senior government officials, security heads, and members of the diplomatic community. News of Karki’s appointment was met with celebrations by Gen Z groups outside the President’s office in Maharajganj, Kathmandu. Former Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai was the only former Prime Minister present at the ceremony. The decision to appoint an acting Prime Minister followed consultations with leaders from major political parties, legal experts, and respected members of civil society. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was forced to resign after widespread protests by the Gen Z group. The main demands of the protesters included curbing corruption, ending partiality, and lifting restrictions on social media sites. At least 51 people, including an Indian citizen, died in the recent Gen Z protests against corruption and restrictions on social media platforms in Nepal.
