Amidst escalating unrest in Nepal stemming from Gen Z protests, India is closely monitoring the situation. India expressed hope that peace would be maintained, and all issues resolved peacefully through dialogue. Indian citizens in Nepal have been advised to exercise caution and follow local guidelines. Protesters have set ablaze the Nepal parliament, marking a major escalation. Visuals show extensive flames and smoke. At least 19 protesters were killed and over 200 injured on Monday as police responded to demonstrations against the government’s ban on numerous social media platforms.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement expressing sadness over the loss of life and offering condolences, marking the first official Indian government comment. The MEA further stated that as a neighbor, it hopes for restraint and peaceful resolutions through dialogue.
Authorities have imposed curfews in Kathmandu and other cities. Indian nationals in Nepal are advised to remain cautious and adhere to local directives. Protests erupted in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Bhairahawa, Itahari, and Chitwan. Police used force in Kathmandu and Itahari, resulting in casualties.
