From Nauru to Naoero: Language‑Driven Rebranding Marks New Era

New Delhi, August 3 (IANS) – The island republic previously known as Nauru has formally rebranded itself as the Republic of Naoero, a change driven by the desire to match the nation’s own linguistic conventions. President David Ediyang explained that the revised spelling and pronunciation better reflect the native tongue and restore a sense of cultural authenticity that was lost when the name was anglicized for international usage.

In a parliamentary session held in January, the amendment was presented as a tribute to the country’s heritage, language and identity. After two voting rounds, the proposal cleared the legislative hurdle, although paperwork to amend official records was still being finalized.

The atoll, with a population of around 12,000, is the world’s third smallest independent state after Tuvalu and Vatican City. Once a German colony and later an Australian territory, it has no official capital and relies heavily on foreign aid. After a lucrative phosphate mining era in the 1970s, the economy crumbled in the 1990s, leaving the nation vulnerable to sea‑level rise and other climate impacts.

President Ediyang described the renaming as “the start of a new national pride.” While a nationwide referendum was originally considered, lawmakers later decided a public vote was unnecessary, citing thorough parliamentary deliberation. The name change will also require updating the designation of the national aircraft, and diplomatic missions worldwide have been asked to adopt the new terminology.
