National Party Gains Slight Lead in Taxpayers Union Poll After Confidence Vote

A new poll commissioned by the Taxpayers Union and conducted by Kuria Research between 1 and 4 August shows the National Party edging ahead with 31% support, up 0.5 points from its previous reading. The Labour Party fell to 27.8%, a drop of 3.7 points.

The survey, which interviewed 1,000 eligible and likely voters, carries a margin of error of ±3.1 percentage points. It follows the National Party’s internal confidence vote on 12 August, where Prime Minister Christopher Luxor retained full backing from his caucus.

The poll suggests that the National-led coalition could maintain a narrow majority in Parliament after the general election scheduled for 7 November. Earlier in July, a Radio New Zealand‑Read Research poll had recorded National’s support at a low 28.7%, the weakest level since Luxor became party leader in 2021.

If the upward trend continues, the governing party may capitalize on its renewed internal cohesion to challenge the Labour‑led opposition more effectively during the final campaign stretch.
