Multiple Senior Law Officers Leave Bangladesh AG Office Since September

Dhaka – Since early September, the Attorney General's Office in Bangladesh has experienced a wave of resignations among its senior legal staff. Deputy Attorney General Shiu Li Khanam resigned on October 17, citing private reasons. Her departure follows that of Deputy Attorney General Belayet Hussain, who left on September 21 for similar personal reasons.

Earlier, Deputy Attorney General Sadiya Afrin Shahla quit on September 9. The most dramatic episode took place on September 7 when five senior law officers – Additional Attorney General Mohammad Abdul Jabar Bhuyan, Deputy Attorney General Sultanah Akhtar Ruby, Deputy Attorney General Mamoon Chowdhury, Assistant Attorney General Rohani Siddika, and Assistant Attorney General Projjal Chakma – submitted simultaneous resignations.

The resignations are not confined to September. In June, a group of seven Deputy Attorney Generals and eleven Assistant Attorney Generals, backed by the Jamat party, collectively resigned in protest of an undisclosed governmental decision.

Both Khanam and Hussain have publicly mentioned personal factors, yet analysts question whether political interference or internal administrative disputes are fueling the turnover. The Attorney General's Office, responsible for high‑court advocacy and advising the government on legal matters, has not responded to inquiries.

The rapid exit of senior officials could disrupt case management and weaken the office's capacity to represent the state effectively.
