MRI Scan Reveals How Dogs Read Human Faces

The Vienna team employed functional magnetic resonance imaging to capture real‑time neural responses of dogs watching human facial expressions. The dogs, all healthy and behaviorally normal, were first shown cheerful and neutral faces, which triggered activity in the temporal cortex and the caudate nucleus—areas associated with processing social signals and positive reinforcement. In the second phase, the same dogs viewed fearful, angry and sad faces. Advanced pattern‑recognition software identified distinct activation maps for fear versus the other two emotions, while sadness and anger produced overlapping patterns. This suggests that dogs’ brains can categorize threat‑related cues more precisely than they can parse subtler negative moods.
