Modi Studies Dutch Flood Defense System to Boost India Water Projects

During his visit to the Netherlands, Prime Minister Narendra Modi toured the Offslodijk Dam, a 32-kilometer engineering marvel designed to protect the Dutch coastline from the North Sea while enabling freshwater storage and land reclamation. Modi described the dam's technology as highly instructive and praised the Netherlands for its pioneering role in water management. Speaking on social media platform X, he thanked Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten for facilitating the visit and allowing India to gain insights into advanced flood control mechanisms. Modi noted that India is actively working to integrate modern technology into its irrigation systems, flood prevention strategies, and inland waterway networks. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted that the tour reflects the deepening cooperation between India and the Netherlands in areas of water innovation, climate resilience, and sustainable infrastructure development. Officials pointed out striking parallels between the Offslodijk Dam and the proposed Kalpsar Project in Gujarat. The Kalpsar initiative seeks to construct a vast freshwater reservoir across the Gulf of Khambhat, combining tidal energy production with irrigation and transport infrastructure. As part of the visit, both nations signed a letter of intent for technical collaboration on the Kalpsar Project, involving India's Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Netherlands Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. Leaders agreed that combining Dutch engineering know-how with India's execution capabilities could unlock significant opportunities for joint water management ventures. The engagement reinforced the strategic water partnership between the two countries, focusing on innovation and long-term sustainability.
