Modi‑Luxon Talks to Focus on Trade, Defence and Free‑Trade Deal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon in Auckland on July 10‑11 for a high‑level dialogue covering trade, commerce, defence and broader strategic interests.

The two‑day summit is the first of its kind for an Indian prime minister in New Zealand in 40 years. Officials say the talks will assess achievements of the past two years and chart a roadmap for deeper cooperation.

A key topic on the table is the proposed free‑trade agreement (FTA) between the two countries. Indian community leaders in Auckland believe finalising the FTA will resolve longstanding trade bottlenecks and spur economic growth on both sides.

Local Indian entrepreneurs highlighted that similar agreements have previously translated into increased exports, joint ventures, and technology transfer. They are hopeful that the upcoming discussions will lead to a signed pact that benefits not only India and New Zealand but also the broader Indo‑Pacific region.

Defence cooperation is also expected to feature prominently, with both sides keen on enhancing maritime security and joint training exercises.
